You might want to visit Worth for a longer period to get a deeper experience of what it is like to be a monk.
Worth Abbey runs an internship programme for small groups of men to live in proximity to the Community and share in their lives. This internship is designed for men who are curious about monastic life or who want time and space to deepen their prayer and discernment, without pressure or expectation. We are always glad to hear from those who are curious about life at Worth.
What is an internship? An internship is an opportunity for up to five men at a time to live alongside the monastic community for two months, sharing in a way of life shaped by that of the monks. During this time, you will be introduced to the Benedictine tradition and have the opportunity to live in community, deepen your prayer life, and grow in personal engagement with Scripture.
Who can apply? Men aged between eighteen and thirty-five.
How long is an internship? Each internship lasts around two months, and we run three programmes each year.
Is there any cost? No. We will provide you with board, lodging, teaching and guidance. In line with the monastic way of life, you will be expected to work in the monastery some of the time you are here and therefore contribute towards the welfare of Worth.
Why are we doing this? It is hoped that the silence and prayerful atmosphere of the monastery and Abbey Church will help you to deepen your spiritual search and to tune in to God’s loving presence in your life. As St Benedict writes in the Prologue to his Rule: “What, dear brothers, is more delightful than this voice of the Lord calling to us?”
