Join our liturgy
Worship, through the sacred liturgy, is at the heart of our life here at Worth Abbey.
As St Benedict teaches “Nothing is to be preferred to the Work of God.” (RB 43.3)
The monks of Worth Abbey gather six times a day to celebrate the sacred liturgy. Each time has its own character:
- the dark glimmer of Matins encourages an attentive listening to Psalms and Scripture;
- Lauds praises the dawn of day – “the rising Sun has come to visit us“
- At midday the short pause from work reminds and encourages us in our attentive waiting.
- The Monastic Mass is the heart of the day, the source and summit of the whole Christian life, as Vatican II called it.
- The Vesper hour allows the day to be drawn together as daylight fades and the distinct silence of night descends.
- Compline (meaning completion) is the conclusion of the monastic day. Entering the night, we pray “May the Lord grant us a quiet night and a perfect end”.
Anyone wanting to join our liturgies is encouraged to check our calendar for the timings. Our calendar has the most up to date times for the next two weeks. This is particularly important at Easter, Christmas and during the holiday season.

The Abbey church is often used for parish, school or special events. By checking the calendar you can see when these are. The church is available at all other times for private prayer.
