Season 7: Monks in the City – Upcoming Events in Brighton

This autumn, the Brighton Community welcomes a series of thought-provoking events that invite us to explore the depth and diversity of monastic and Benedictine spirituality. As part of Season 7: Monks in the City, these gatherings offer rare insights into lives shaped by prayer, discernment, and community.

Special Vespers: Solemnity of St Philip Howard Sunday 19th October at 4pm St John the Baptist Church, Brighton

The Monks in the City warmly invite you to join them for Special Vespers in honour of the Solemnity of St Philip Howard, held at St John the Baptist Church. This reflective service will be followed by light refreshments and offers a beautiful opportunity to gather in prayer.

This Enclosed Monastic Life” Monday 28th October Speaker: Sister Walburga, Minster Abbey

Sister Walburga of St Mildred’s Priory, Minster Abbey, will share her personal journey into monastic life. After converting to Catholicism, she joined the Compass discernment programme at Worth Abbey and spent a formative year with the Wellspring community in Brighton before entering Minster Abbey. Her talk will explore the theme of finding peace within the walls of an 11th-century abbey, offering a rare and intimate glimpse into the contemplative life and its enduring relevance today.

The Lay Benedictine Life” Tuesday 18th November Speaker: Adam Simon, Lay Community of St Benedict

Adam Simon joins the community in Brighton for an evening dedicated to the richness of lay Benedictine spirituality. The evening begins with Evening Prayer at 6pm, followed by a simple supper, and the talk at 7pm.

Drawing from his experience within the Lay Community of St Benedict, Adam will reflect on how Benedictine values—stability, hospitality, and listening—can shape everyday life outside the cloister, offering a path of spiritual depth for lay people in today’s fast-paced world.
