Our Community in Brighton has been invited by Bishop Richard to “collectively” take on the role of assistant priest in the East Brighton parish.  We will now move (for the third time in two years!) to the Presbytery of St John the Baptist church (SJB) in Kemptown.

This is one of the two churches, SJB and St Joseph’s, that make up the diocesan parish of East Brighton.  Canon Kieran O’Brien, the Parish Priest, will return to his former home at St. Joseph’s in order to make the whole of the SJB presbytery available to the community.  This invitation and physical move will enable us to be more integrated into the Parish and the large presbytery will be well suited as a monastic community home, enabling us to offer a monastic presence and mission in central Brighton.

We take on parish responsibilities from the beginning of August and I anticipate that the physical move will take place in the last week of August.

This is a great opportunity for us to trial a form of monastic life with pastoral work in a parish and at the same time continue to support Wellspring and the University chaplaincies.  Fr Rod will continue as Sussex University RC chaplain.  From August, Fr Gabriel will cover as RC Chaplain to Brighton University while the current chaplain, Claire O’Sullivan, takes maternity leave.  With the opening in September of the Fitzherbert Community Hub (a social outreach centre containing a café) adjacent to the church, we are presented with further opportunities for pastoral engagement.  This is all very exciting.
